The Souda refugee camp on Chios island, Greece during a rainstorm. The fabric tents have been "winterized" against the freezing elements by merely covering them in UNHCR plastic tarps. Water seeps into the fabric tents from all directions, including from under the fabric floor, leaving blankets, bedding, clothes and other items continually wet and cold. The plastic tarps also prevent the tents from drying out in the sun during the day. Souda houses approximately 1,200 refugees. Greece is currently housing approximately 64,000 refugees. The UNHCR arguably is performing with limited resources and weak global commitment, leaving the refugees living in deplorable conditions by first world standards.
